We Have Lift Off
The leader of the pack could be forgiven if he had the feeling someone was looking over his shoulder—two of them were in hot pursuit and had to look out below while their heavy crafts suddenly ran out of air time and were pulled down by gravity. The snowmobile action was held at the fairgrounds where the Provost Kinsmen Club staged an annual Snocross event. More pictures in February 26 paper. ©Provost News Photo.

‘No Question’ Alberta Will Press Feds Over
Free Marketing — Ag. Minister
The Alberta government will be “very aggressive” this year and there is “ no question the pressure will be on” in an attempt to affect changes with the federal government over the Canadian Wheat Board regulations says the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development.

Shirley McClellan was responding to questions after her talk at a Farming For Profit session on Friday afternoon when in Provost.

The deputy premier added that Alberta should run a pilot project for 10 years that will “allow producers to have a choice” how their wheat and barley is marketed.

McClennan said that Alberta does not advocate the end of the Canadian Wheat Board “but there should be marketing of choice, at least on the domestic level” for wheat and barley that now has to first be funnelled through the CWB. Farmers in Ontario are not restricted to that practice.

“You (producers) would have control under what we propose” and people would still be able to choose the CWB if they wanted, with Alberta’s plans.

Under questioning from a producer about the Alberta government “discounting the (CWB) election” she added they “are not discounting it at all” and that “83 percent of Alberta producers say they want a choice” on how to market their grain. She wants CWB members to reflect on that figure. She would “be happy” to dissect the election results of the Canadian Wheat Board and look at the first, second and third ballot numbers. She says there was a bare majority for the CWB and it was not as high as final election results appeared.

She was also asked during a question and answer session if the marketing part of grain was such a big deal and responded that on her farm in the New Brigden area 65 miles south of Provost that “it’s the biggest part.” She said that if her grain is not well marketed—if it sits in a granary—it will not do much for her.

If the new system was put in place “maybe 90 percent of producers will market as they already have” and that there would be no costs to find out how many would like the new system of choice being advocated by the provincial government. “We are not asking for a detriment for any producer. You can still market under the CWB so there isn’t an issue there.”

Why can Albertans market their own cattle, hogs, mustard, canola, and flax yet are incapable of marketing two other products, she asked. McClennan pointed out that the farmer buys the land, seeds it, gets it through the year, harvests the crop and then when selling it is not able to market it. “Why is this? Why doesn't that producer want choice? That's all they want. Why can we not be treated the same as Ontario? That hurts our producers . . . so treat us the same as the rest of Canada. We are just looking for fairness and choice.”
