Provost News Wins Two National Awards
The Provost News has won a national award in two categories at this year’s annual Canadian Community Newspapers Association convention that was held in Gatineau, Quebec June 3 - 5.

Final standings in the 2004 Better Newspapers Competition (BNC) for the “Best House Ad” showed The Provost News in second place. First was a paper from Haliburton, Ontario while third was a newspaper from Hinton, Alberta.

The in-house ad featured a message about using colour ink in community newspaper advertising and it is re-printed in this week’s paper.

The News was up against large papers across the nation with papers having circulations of up to 10,000.

The Provost News also won second place in “Best Photo Essay” for its entry of “One Country, One Community, One Day.” The two, eight page sections were organized locally with one section of colour photos taken by Brett and Rich Holmes of Provost. The other section had photojournalists from other community newspapers take and submit photos from coast to coast to coast—all on the same day.

First in that category was Darren Lum of the Minden (Ontario) Times while third went to Jason Halstead of the Stonewall (Manitoba) Argus & Teulon Times. Competitors in this category included newspapers with circulations of between 4,000 and 12,499 readers.
Editor Rich Holmes says that he was pleased with the results and noted that the photo essay was a particular challenge both locally and also to explain to and co-ordinate with newspapers from across nation to participate. Although some newspapers have done a similar project of a day in the life of their community, Holmes says he has not seen the project with a country-wide angle ever appearing before.

Others co-operating in the nation-wide section were: Jake Wright, The Ottawa Hill Times (Ottawa, Ont.); Jean Kenny, West Prince Graphic, Alberton, (P.E.I.); Jeff King, The Queen Charlotte Islands Observer (B.C.); Darla Read, The La Ronge (Sask.) Northerner; Greg Vandermeullen, The Opasquia Times (The Pas, Manitoba); Derek Crowe, The Yukon News (Whitehorse, Yukon); Frank Macdonald, The Inverness Oran (N.S.); James Schmidt, The Ayr News (Ayr, Ontario); Derrick Lundy, The Driftwood (Gulf Islands, B.C.); Vicki Van Sickle, Boissevain Recorder (Boissevain, Manitoba); Dawn Barker, The Carlyle Observer (Carlyle, Sask.); John DeMings, The Digby (Nova Scotia) Courier; Mike Nelson, Grand Falls-Windsor Advertiser (Newfoundland); Mary-Ellen Godfrey, The Eastern Graphic (Prince Edward Island); Patrick Morley, Slave River Journal (Fort Smith, N.W.T.); Charlene Eden, Spec Reporter (Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec); Paul Lucas, The Mountaineer (Rocky Mountain House, Alta.); Kirsten Murphy, Nunatsaiq News (Iqaluit, Nunavut); Sackville Tribune-Post, New Brunswick (no photographer listed); and Steve Kusheryk, Valley Views (Valleyview, Alta.).
