Ranchers Feeling the Heat
Ranchers are feeling the heat in more than one way this summer—but so are their herds of livestock as water is starting to become a chore to get to.

Jack Daley, who runs a 300 head cow-calf operation nine miles east of Macklin told The News that he is running one half the normal head of cattle on his regular pasture and adds that his dugouts are going dry so has had to clean out springs. One bright spot is that a neighbour has a flowing well and is co-operating with Daley so he can use it as well to water his cattle.

Half of his cattle are being pastured in Battleford, Glaslyn and Spiritwood areas as the heat is relentless in this area.

Daley knows that he will probably have to buy feed barley for his herd and is now baling pea straw for feed at Paradise Valley, Alta. and will take pea straw from the Cutknife, Sask. area as well this week. The crop last year was only mediocre so there is no extra feed handy and the hay crop this year is only about 30 percent of a normal cut.

The Macklin operator says he will likely employ extensive culling (remove rejected animals from the herd) this fall. Roughage for feedlots may be a problem as well he says. The year 1961 was “a tough year” and says 2001 looks about the same.
