M.D. Declared Agricultural Disaster Area

Members of the Municipal District of Provost No. 52 have unanimously declared the M.D. an “Agricultural Disaster Area.”

The declaration was made at a specially called conference telephone call on Thursday morning, May 23.

The News was invited to the 8 a.m. speaker phone meeting with administrator Iris Larson in the M.D. building when all councillors called from different areas.

Councillors on the phone and voting for the declaration were: Larry Swanson, Allan Murray, Tom Schneider, Fritz Crone, Len Kjos, Jack Roworth and Brent Mercereau.

Roworth, who made the motion said that there has been no moisture here the last two winters and the problem “covers all areas of the M.D., especially the east end.” Reeve Crone said before the vote that he “can’t argue the point” that this is a disaster area.

The declaration would not trigger any provincial or federal aid but that if a federal crop program is set up, then Crone says, this would make the M.D. eligible for funding. He added that people in other areas have been getting rain and “don’t realize the extent of the problem here.”

Fire Dept. Braces for Dry, Hot Summer
Members of the Provost volunteer fire department are gearing up for what could be a long, dry—and hot summer by arranging for strategic water storage tanks to be placed in rural areas.

Assistant fire chief Barry Johnstone told The News that the fire department is getting “very concerned” about the dry conditions across the M.D., especially since the Victoria Day fire that quickly swept through the prairie west and north of Hayter. “We realized there is a major problem with the water supply” in the rural area.

Fire chief Wilf Nett said that there are no lakes or sloughs that they can count on to suck water up while out on a rural call.
