No Students Show Up; Czar School to Close
Plans are being made to close the Czar School because of a lack of students.

No one showed up for class on the first day of school on Tuesday morning, September 4, though superintendent of Buffalo Trail Public Schools Nancy Spencer-Poitras who is also a certified teacher was there to greet any students or parents.

She told The Provost News at approximately 9 a.m. at the building that she had no students registered and did not know of any that were expected to show up.

School trustee Dave Nelson confirmed on September 6 in a telephone interview that no one appeared for class and added that he plans to make a motion at the next school board meeting in a week (September 19) to close the school.
“I am sad to see the school go” said Nelson who added that the main reason for the closure is because of the “school of choice” legislation now in Alberta. He says that rule, in effect for several years “has killed a lot of rural schools in Alberta” and is designed for people to attend any school in the province as long as they can physically get there. Before that schools were designated to people living nearby.

Grades 1 to 6 were being taught at the school that was served by two full time teachers and a teacher assistant/secretary.

At the end of school there were 12 students attending classes but, Nelson points out there could have been 50 if the “school of choice” rule was not in effect. He believes that all the students from last year will now be attending school in Hughenden (with possibly one exception with a student now going to Provost, though for a different technical reason).

A public meeting has been called by the board of trustees of Buffalo Trail Public Schools for September 18 in the Czar School gymnasium to discuss the proposed closure.
