Volunteer Group Has Pumped Over $80,000 Back Into Community
• 18 Women Dedicated to Helping Through Candy Cane Lane Work
Candy Cane Lane will sell you a pair of shoes for $1, a woman’s dress for $3, skates for $5, men’s dress pants for $3, jeans for $4 and a shirt for $2. A coat sells for $5.
A variety of used clothing have been for sale in town for 21 years, providing a service to those willing to buy them as well as more recently miscellaneous small household items and toys.

Kathy Swancoat who has been donating her time managing the operation after work hours for the last 20 years says that she and helper Josephine Sieben have 16 women who also take turns manning the store on a volunteer basis.

The operation has become so successful that one part of it has become a problem: too many donations are now piling up on the front steps every day.

Swancoat says that they get an average of five large black garbage bags filled with clothing and miscellaneous items each day. “That’s too much” to sort through and sell. Very few of the bags appear when there’s someone at the store to take them; they’re almost always dropped off after the store is closed on Main Street in the old post office.

The public can help by “bringing us only good stuff” says the manager. Sometimes they have to put a sign in the window reminding the public that the store is “not a garage sale drop off or for garage items that did not sell.” But they also get some good items and are thankful for that she adds before pointing out that they appreciate it if clothing is washed before it is donated. She spends an hour and a half to two hours every day after her regular job to sort through the newly donated items, some of which have to be thrown out.
