Wildrose Alliance Leadership Hopeful Wants to Give Dissatisfied Albertans an Alternative
Wildrose Alliance Party leader hopeful, Danielle Smith is looking to take the reigns of the party this October and one day becoming premier of Alberta.

Smith has every intention of filling each riding with a Wildrose Alliance candidate in the next provincial election — including one in the constituency Provost belongs to, Battle River-Wainwright.

“(We need one in) every riding,” Smith says. “That’s the only way we can seriously contest. Our hope is that after this (leadership) race is over, that we can get those constituencies established.”

In the 2008 election, the Wildrose Alliance Party ran in 63 of the 83 constituencies in the province. No one from the party ran in this area, but Orest Werezak managed to garner 15 per cent of the vote for the Alberta Alliance in the previous 2004 election, which was second best behind current MLA Doug Griffiths.

The Progressive Conservatives, plowed their way through all other parties by winning a whopping 72 ridings. But with the Tories taking a beating over oil and gas royalties, health care, and the environment, Smith is counting on her party fairing well during the next election.

The Wildrose Alliance was created when the Alberta Alliance and the Wildrose Party merged in 2008.

Interim leader for the party, Paul Hinman is stepping down from his post, which has opened up the door for three candidates, including Smith.

The Calgary native is up against two other members, Mark Dyrholm and Jeff Willerton, both also from the Calgary area, but her eyes are fixed on the real competition: the other parties.

“We’ve got a problem now. We have got to make sure the amount of operational spending is sustainable. So we’re completely out of balance now. We must be spending 5 to 7 billion dollars more than we’re taking in.” Smith, who has a degree in economics (as well as one in English) is concerned.

“We may no longer have these resources to rely on. The first priority (under a Wildrose Alliance government) is to get spending under control and then look at ways to trim taxes.”
