In ’Guards We Trust
The Provost pool is reflected off the watchful eyes of senior lifeguards Kalee Almberg (foreground) of Provost and Tiffany Feser of Macklin during a recent swim club practice. Neither lifeguard has had to rescue any swimmers this year and they hope to keep it that way by teaching people, young and old, how to swim. Lessons at the Provost pool have been on since May and wrap up in August. It’s estimated that several hundred people have participated in lessons this summer at the pool. This is expected to be the last summer the Provost Kinsmen outdoor swimming pool operates if the pool at the Regional Activity Centre is ready in 2010. Pool Set to Close After Nearly 4 Decades
For those who are looking to take one last cannonball in the Provost pool, you’d better grab your swimsuit quick.

The Provost Kinsmen outdoor swimming pool will be closing Sunday, August 23 for the season and it’s possible that it may not open again next year. That’s because the pool at the Regional Activity Centre is expected to be filled to the brim next season and ready to go.

Whether the existing pool opens next season is dependent on how construction on the $1,045,000 new one goes, and in turn, construction is dependent on funding.

Regardless, says Town of Provost recreation director, Kevin Ganser, there will be a pool.

“Construction for the new pool at the Regional Activity Centre is currently taking place. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2010. To remain on this timeline more support for the community fundraising effort is needed right now. At the end of summer the current pool will be shut down and winterized. It will be ready to be started up next spring if need be” says Ganser.

The current pool was constructed in 1972, which puts it at 37 years old (used for 38 seasons). It has five lanes, and features a small and a big diving board—which likely won’t be making the trip out to the new pool as more modern equipment may eventually be installed provided enough cash is raised. What extra features exactly, like diving boards, have yet to be determined.

The new pool will not be indoor, but Ganser says that the people who are constructing the building say it could be covered in the future.

It will be six lanes large, and connected to a “teach pool” that has a zero depth entrance for young children or people who aren’t comfortable with the deeper water. As well there will be an eight-person hot tub for people to relax in.

“All features for the pool at the Regional Activity Centre will be a significant step up from what the current pool is operating with,” says Ganser. “The change rooms will be larger and accommodate more people. Additional change rooms will be available for families, handicap access, and staff.”
