An upgrade to AltaLink’s substation east of Metiskow (right) will be required if approval for a major electrical transmission line installation is approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. Charts and other literature was available to anyone taking in a public meeting in Metiskow on April 15. AltaLink and ATCO Electric plan to work on a 240 kilovolt double circuit transmission line to handle future power needs in the area, which is part of a bigger strategy in this part of Alberta. An open house was held on Thursday afternoon and evening at Metiskow to explain to the public and landowners in the area plans for part of a major upgrade to the electrical system.

AltaLink organized the 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 15 session that had 19 of their staff and six from ATCO Electric present.

Both AltaLink and ATCO Electric plan to work on a connecting transmission line which is to originate in the Metiskow area and head south.

If the project is approved by regulators, AltaLink will construct approximately 20 kilometres of 240 kilovolt double circuit transmission line. That line using towers 44 to 51 metres tall will be called 966L and will be built from AltaLink’s existing Hansman Lake substation.

The line will connect to ATCO Electric’s proposed 240 kilovolt double circuit transmission line, which will be built from ATCO’s proposed substation called Pemukan 932S.

The total distance of the new line from AltaLink’s substation east of Metiskow to ATCO’s substation south will be an estimated 60 km.

The transmission grid upgrade is part of an overall reinforcement connected to the Hanna region which is served by transmission facility owners AltaLink and ATCO Electric.

AltaLink says that its proposed transmission line will be built with double circuit steel lattice structures up to 50 metres high and 20 metres wide. One set of three wires will be used on only one side of the towers which will be spaced at 350 metres apart.

The transmission right-of-way will be a strip of land 50 metres wide.

AltaLink also plans to upgrade its existing substation east of Metiskow, near Highway 13.

Senior project manager for AltaLink, Philippe Maldiney of Calgary was one of the representatives at the open house. He told The Provost News that the project is a major one and that AltaLink will spend approximately $80 million on the Metiskow transmission project that will lead south to join up with ATCO’s line.
